Office Hour – Play – ArtsWest “Office Hour” play at ArtsWest. Confused w/ what actually vs potentially occurred in the story timeline. Radical conflictingly sympathetic portrayal of mass shooting killers. Well-performed final climactic montage of violence.
John – Play – ArtsWest Watched the slow 3-act play “John” w/ Eyal at ArtsWest. Random & plotless … but very detailed set. Many promisingly ominous moments ended up anticlimactic or unresolved. The highfalutin critical appeal is lost on me. #NotAFan
M. Butterfly – Play – ArtsWest Playhouse Riveting Tony Awards-winning play “M. Butterfly.” Multilayered commentary on gender/sexual conformity, Asian racial stereotypes, & east vs west. A Seattle play finally uses nudity constructively. #madameButterfly Comments
Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill – Play with Music – ArtsWest Watched the “jukebox play” Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. No plot except Billie Holliday gets sloshed and unravels on a nightclub stage. Great jazzy sound. Would have been amazing if drinks and maybe light food were served throughout the performance.
An Octoroon – Play – ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery Opening weekend of the play An Octoroon. I think they were trying to be “edgy theatre” but ended up being just bizarre. They also did whiteface, blackface, & redface. Not sure what was the point of all the offensive depictions. — attending An Octoroon at ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery.
