Peter and the Starcatcher play by Reboot Theatre Company. Opening weekend at Theatre Off Jackson. Performing until 9/23. Stay tuned for my full review!
Elevator Thoughts (aka Tweet): All New Cells play at The Shattered Glass Project & Theatre Off Jackson directed by Alison Kozar. Starring Kasper Cergol, Kay Taylor Yelinek, Jasmine Lomax, & Zenaida Rose Smith. Neat prop/lighting design. Only 2 more performances! Wish I could rewatch to the first scene with my new perspective.
Synopsis from the Theatre: When Nils’s ex-girlfriend dies suddenly, he is dragged back into a toxic online roleplay scene he swore he’d never return to. He’d been doing okay sticking to his seven-year plan for getting over their breakup – but now, everyone either blames him or expects him to have answers, and he’s getting nasty anonymous messages that might be coming from beyond the grave. A nuanced examination of identity, trauma, assault, grief, and mental health through an online world.

Other Rave(s) Not Mentioned in Elevator Thoughts
Lighting/Scenic Design: There’s something I love about simple rectangular frames with LED light trim that changes color. It reminded me Seattle Repertory Theatre’s recent Lydia and The Troll. The spotlights dedicated to each character only extenuated the design.
Prop Design: The laptop/monitor screens and cell phones were thick plexiglass. It doesn’t sound like much on paper but it conveyed a more futuristic feel. Plus, the transparency unobstructed the actors. An opaque monitor prop would have significantly blocked Moody’s face.
End of First Act (No Spoilers): The end of the first act revealed a juicy unexpected twist. Good last line before the lights cut out … although I wonder how many people would know the reference.
Obsession: I was facinated with Moody’s (played by Kay Taylor Yelinek) stalker-like fixation. Well-written and well-executed.
Rant(s)
Prop Movement: Props and furniture were moved during scenes, which was a little distracting. It would have been better to cut the lights and quickly move things around.
Blocking: The characters at stage center need better blocking when speaking to Nils, who was at upper center stage. It’s usually not a good idea to turn your back to the audience unless the seating is arena theatre style or surrounding a thrust stage.
Other Musing(s) and Observation(s)
Costume Design: The characters looked sooo Seattle, which fit well with the story themes.

Elevator Thoughts (aka Tweet): An Incomplete List of All the Things I’m Going to Miss When the World is No Longer: w/ Dacha Theatre at Theatre Off Jackson. Experimental abstract allegorical musical about a house party rager before the end of the world. Very open to interpretation. #theatre
Synopsis from the Theatre: An Incomplete List of All the Things I’m Going to Miss When The World is No Longer: is an electro-synth musical at the end of the world. Following a global announcement of the exact time Earth, as we know it, will cease to exist, a community of young queer friends and lovers decide the only reasonable thing would be to gather together for one last rager. This musical invites you into a glance at the last party on Earth–interwoven through a retrospective of cherished and tragic memories–to celebrate and mourn the delights and deceptions of the human experience.
Reviewed Performance: 1/29/23 Evening on Opening Weekend – Sorry for the late review. I’ve been busy with my dad in town.
Type: Musical – This is uncommon for abstract experimental shows, which are usually plays instead
World Premiere: No
Defined Plot/Storyline: No – It was a mix of past, present, and maybe imagined vignettes.
Live Band/Orchestra: Yes
Recommendation: See it if 1) you’re into abstract, experimental shows that are open to interpretation 2) or you liked Arlington.
Was This the First Time I Saw a Production of this Show: Yes
Equity Actors: None
Number of Actors: 14
Length (Including Any Intermission): A little less than 2 hours. The show either needs to be shorter or needs to include an intermission!
Intermission: No
Other Musing(s) and Observation(s)
Coveralls: Was there any symbolism behind all the boilersuits? Or am I too far removed from what’s fashionable these days? Major “coolaid and sneakers cult” vibes!
Out of Tune?: One of the actors sang out of tune and I was wondering if it was intentional or not because of the allegorical nature of the musical.
Audience Participation: Before the musical started, cast members filtered into the theatre like it was a house party. They interacted with the audience in character asking “Do you know this band that’s playing?” or “Who do you know anybody at this party?” I actually didn’t realize one of the people talking to me was an actor at first! If you don’t want to interact with the cast before the show starts, just glue your eyes to your phone. 🙂 Additionally, halfway through the show, they asked all audience members to join on-stage if they wanted to. Half the audience acquiesced, and the cast continued to perform to the remaining audience members in their seats, which could be awkward if only one person decided to stay in their seat!
Moral of the Story: What was the message? I always struggle to grasp this in shows that are very abstract and experimental. Leave a comment in my social media post links below about what you think it is!

Elevator Thoughts (aka Tweet): Jesus Christ Superstar musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber w/ Reboot Theatre Company at Theatre Off Jackson. Novel modernized production w/ a cool TV-driven set. Sweet harmony from the energetic inclusively-cast ensemble. Pleasantly surprised there was a tap dance number. Favorite actors were Herod, Annas, & Pilate. #Jesus #Christ #JesusChristSuperstar #JesusChrist #theatre
Synopsis from the Theatre: Don’t miss our high octane heavenly production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR! We’re excited to continue our reputation for new interpretations of established musicals and long history of inclusive with this rockin’ fan favorite, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR focuses on the personal relationships between Jesus, Mary, and Judas, and examines the highs and lows of stardom, fanaticism, and mob justice.
Reviewed Performance Date: 11/4/22 Evening
Type: Musical
World Premiere: No
Live Band: Yes
Recommendation: See it! Especially if you like inclusive casting.
Would I See It Again 3 Years from Now?: Yes
Rating (Out of 5 Stars): 4.5 stars
Equity Actors: Zero but don’t let that steer you away from this production.
Rant(s)
Background vocals on namesake signature song “Superstar” needed more volume or energy.
While I appreciate the gender inclusive casting that Reboot Theatre is known for, I wish they would (or could?) transpose songs sung by the opposite gender of what the composer wrote it for. Often times, performers were singing at the lower end of their range and the audience either can’t hear it or it just doesn’t sound good.
Other Rave(s)
I loved how Noel Pederson portrayed Annas as a stern, cold, calculating corporate suit well on her way to eventually shatter the glass ceiling!
